PREMIUM CIGARS 101: Shape, Size & Color What distinguishes the different cigars? There are many different things to look for in premium cigars. The most distiguishing aspects of a cigar are: shape, size, and color. Cigars come in all different sizes. We recommend smoking larger cigars when you have the time to enjoy them, and smaller ones when you do not have as much time but would still enjoy a quality cigar. Size will vary in both length and ring gauge even among the same type of cigar. For example, one double corona could be 7 1/2 inches long with a ring gauge of 48 while another could be 8 inches long with a ring guage of 52. Generally, most cigars come with a ring gauge between 26 and 52. Larger cigars tend to be better made because only the most experienced rollers are allowed to make them. For more information about the sizes of the most common cigars see our size chart below. By shape, cigars are divided into two classifications. Cigars that have straight sides (parejos) and those that are irregularly shaped (figurados). The best known figurados are pyramides (closed end with a wider foot), belicoso (small pyramides with a rounded head), torpedo (both the end and the foot are closed) and culebra (three panetelas braided together).
